Masking took a while, but seemed to work well. I suffered from the black undercoat "bleeding through" the white and making it an ice-blue, but a squirt of spray varnish and then a couple of coats of white fixed it. There was a fair bit of tidying up to do, but it looks good enough to game over.
I also touched up the other two boards (addressing the "ice-blue bleed" issue by touching up the white) and then decided to give them a coat of some varnish. I had a big tin of clear satin urethane in the basement, and slapped it on good. It takes 24 hours to dry, and I will probably need a coat of flat spray varnish to knock down the shine, but it will protect it nicely. I am happy with these - and I think they will look good with some scenery on them.
