May 2022 Roundup!

So how was May? Well, I did something every day, I tried a new thing (zenithal priming - jury is still out on that!), I participated in #MudfootsInMay challenge (8x Les Grogards). I did, alas, buy some more models - and there wasn't really any justification for them except I wanted to :( I got 5x vehicles for Les Grognards which I really didn't need to do ... and I failed to paint the whole set of those (which was probably a bit ambitious, anyway!)

I did sell some models (some of the Slaves to Darkness I didn't need) and so with painting and purchases and those sales, I ended the month with 8 models net painted (or equivalent) putting me on negative 5 net for the year so far.

On to June, and #ChonkyJune (Lords of War and other large models) - I think getting Le Nain Rouge finished is indicated definitely!

May 31st 2022: Lorraine 37Ls

As part of my complete failure to not buy any models, I splurged about $8 apiece on these 1:35th scale Lorraine 37L vehicles (they were the French interwar APC and so will go with my Les Grognards as Chimera-equivalents). I spent a bit of time assembling them, but that is probably all I will do for a while - because tomorrow begins #ChonkyJune!

May 27th 2022: Outremer Background

Taking a break from painting, I worked on my World Anvil page for Outremer, doing a lot of little work but mostly going off on a wild diversion about a honey-analog in 40K . . .

May 26th 2022: Halftrack

I glued the two halves together and am worried it looks like, well, two vehicles mashed together. I got some feedback and advice but have decided to let it alone for a while and work on other things.

May 24th and 25th 2022: "Three Cities" Halftrack

I ordered some 20th century (I think WWII, but maybe WWI) French APCs to use as Chimeras for my Three Cities "Les Grognards" but I only got three, and while there are three squads in a platoon the command squad also needs a ride. I've always liked the aesthetics of halftracks and there is a French halftrack of the period .... but finding a 1:35th scale model was impossible. So, as a lol I found a genuine 1975 Airfix kit of Rommel's halftrack "Greif". I was going to assemble that as intended and make small changes, but then I thought about getting an Achilles Ridgerunner and bashing them together. Behold the progress!

May 23rd 2022: Renault FT

More work on the Renault FT - built some sponsons and gave it an undercoat of black and then a zenithal base of a sort of tan color.

May 22nd 2022: Renault FT

A day busy with other things, but I managed to do a little work on the sponson assemblies (which are hard to fit on this tank, because it is simply not designed to include them).

More work on the Renault - the other wheel assembly is in place.

May 20th 2022: Renault FT

The Renault FT continues - I've got to say; these historical kits have so many tiny pieces and they are a blether to put together.

May 16th 2022: La SPEESE FRENCH Tank

In gross defiance of any sort of reasonable keeping to not buying crap, I bought a FT17 Renault tank in 1:35th scale and started assembling it. YOLO.

May 14th 2022: Les Grognards

So little time to do anything today! But I did glue some sand on some bases so . . .

May 13th 2022: Le Nain Rouge

A lot of work today to get all the armor panels basically done and attached. Still needs a lot of cleanup, a lot of details, and a few more decals - but now it looks like something!

May 12th 2022: Le Nain Rouge armor plates

In an orgy of flat colors and decals, I got a lot of work on Le Nain Rouge's armor plates done.

May 6th to 11th 2022: Le Nain Rouge

Several days when I didn't really do much at all - busy with social events, then feeling sick, and then working being done in the house. I did do something each day (and I also sold five figures I didn't need on eBay, so that helps with the net numbers!) and I managed to get the plates already on the main body in blue with some golden fleurs-des-lys decals.

May 5th 2022: Le Nain Rouge

A very quick and dirty use of "Dirty Down Rust" over a gunmetal / silver spray. Very quick and the end result is awesome.

May 2nd 2022: Les Grognards et Le Nain Rouge

I finished (with the exception of bases and decals) 4 of Les Grognards and took delivery of the Taro Modelmaker pieces for Le Nain Rouge and built his hands.

May 1st 2022: Les Grognards

I finished the assembly from yesterday and got to painting ... and tried the "new thing" which was zenithal priming. Thorough undercoat in black, then white from 45 degrees. I can see how it would be useful, but I think I need to practice more and also to use different colors over the top. The Army Painter Speedpaint "Cloudburst Blue" is very dark and fairly opaque, so it tends to hide the zenithal prime.
