Well, the last post here was the end of February 2020 and then . . . nothing. Despite the fact that coincided with the start of it, my lack of hobby progress wasn't anything to do with COVID - I actually got a fair bit done during the lockdown. I just stopped with this recording. As I said, I was tired and run down and I stopped with the daily work and posting.
But no more! Now we are back in business, babies!
On my other blog I posted Danforth's 2022 Hobby Manifesto and I shall be doing that in 2022. You can see the details and explanation of it there, but here are the four pledges that make it up;
- To participate in all 12 of the Warhammer 40,000 MeWe group monthly challenges
- To buy no new Warhammer models in 2022
- To try new things
- To do something hobby every day
Jumping back up to the first; the challenges are as follows;
- January #TheBigJan HQs, leaders, characters – important figures in your army, anything from a squad leader to a general!
- February #Squaduary A squad of some kind – a group of models forming a unit on the table top! This month will also host the #10in24 challenge – take a squad of 10 models from sprue to varnish in a single 24 hour period!
- March #MonsterMarch A monster – either something with that keyword, or just something that you look at and go, “Yeah, that's pretty monstrous . . .”
- April #ArmorInApril Something armored – often a tank or vehicle, but that could be expanded out . . .
- May #MudfootsInMay Troops! Something from the “Troops” selection of your Codex.
- June #ChonkyJune “Oh, Lord [of War] – he's coming!” Big models – Lords of War, massive tanks, Titans, Gargants, particularly fat Gretchen . . .
- July #FlyInJuly Fliers, things with wings, things that hover, things that move without touching the ground.
- August #FastAugtack Fast Attack choices from your Codex.
- September #HeavySeptport Heavy Support choices from your Codex
- October #Dreadtober #Orktober Dreadnoughts (something with legs that would fit on a 60mm base or larger) or something Orky …. or both!
- November #NovElites Elite choices from your Codex
- December #TerrainInDecember Terrain and fortifications – either a specific army list entry, or a piece of scenery
Easy and clear enough!
"No new models" doesn't mean not buying anything new - obviously paints and glues and so forth aren't models. Additionally models bought to complete a project (within reason) are okay. And models bought to try a new thing are fine, too. The goal is to not buy something that isn't immediately used, consumed, finished. By the end of the year I should not be able to point to any unfinished model (except spare bits left over) that I bought in 2022.
Finally, trying new things - and this is going to be a bit more formalized than just "try something new". Each month I will try one new thing. I've got a load of LEDs and wires and shrink tubing, so one month will be "lighting". I want to try a wet palette. I want to make a Gundam model as they look fun and inexpensive. I might get into a Warhammer video game.
I might run out of new things to try, or they might end up being just a new tool (a rubber sculpting tool rather than a metal one). But I will try something new each month if I can.
So, that's it! 2022 here we come!
